Volvo drivers love the remote control capabilities of their key fob. They can lock and unlock their car and start the engine, and even locate it via a smartphone application.

Then, place the fob onto a clean work surface with the logo facing upwards. Find the button that will release it. Place a coin in between the fob cover and the fob, and carefully pull it up.



Unlocking the Door

Volvo's remote key fobs can unlock the doors, tailgate, and fuel filler flap of your car with the touch of one button. The remote key fobs can also turn on the ignition and activate the alarm. If you have a new Volvo model that we have in our dealership, you might be unfamiliar with some of its key fob's hidden features. One of these features is an unlocked and lock button that can be pressed in the event the battery on your key fob goes out.

The key fob should be held with the Volvo logo in the front to press the manual lock/unlock. Find the black button that is located near the edges of the body of your key fob, and gently press it to unlock a cover that hides a manual key blade. You'll require a flathead screwdriver or coin to flip this cover counterclockwise so that the arrow is aligned with "open."

The Engine is Ready to Start

Modern Volvo key fobs provide an ease of use and functionality that is not available with traditional manual keys. But, just like any other battery-powered electronic device key fobs can lose its charge, or cease working over time. If you've noticed that your key fob has become less responsive to pressing the lock or unlock buttons, that's an indication that it's time to replace the battery.

You can activate this feature by using the key fob if the vehicle is equipped with a dealer-installed Engine Remote Start. The vehicle will heat or cool to the same temperature it was set to when it was parked and last for up to 15 minutes.

Use a fingernail to remove the cover on the back of the key fob. The button should be underneath the cover on an angle near the edge of the body. You can remove it by sliding it downwards and to the right. The cover will come out and slide off leaving the manual key blade inside! If you're still having trouble finding the button, look around the newly exposed manual key access area to see if there is a hidden slot or lever.

Closing the Windows

One of the hidden features that is not visible on Volvo key fobs is that you are able to lower all windows immediately when you use them. This is helpful when trying to squeeze into tight parking spaces or simply need fresh air while driving.

To unlock your Volvo simply press and hold the unlock button on your Volvo remote for four seconds. This will lower all of the windows, as well as the sunroof in case your car has one. When you're done with your vehicle, you can close all the windows by pressing the lock key for four seconds.

You can also use the key fob for activating your car's panic alarm. It will emit the alarm sound loud enough to attract attention and deter thieves. It also helps you return to your home in a safe manner when you've been out all night. This feature is helpful if you reside in a hazardous area or wish to ensure the safety of your family while away from home.

The opening of the Tailgate

Volvo has packed its key fob with number of useful features. These are perfect when you're working on shopping or helping your kids to pack their sports gear after practice.

For example, if you have the Hands-Free Power Liftgate with logo projection and programmable height (if equipped), you can open it using the key fob. You can open the liftgate by pressing the button, and then close it by pressing the same button.

When you're ready to start your car then use the key fob to press the START button (and do not worry about the battery dying or your car not starting because it comes with a backup mechanical key slot too). This is just one of the many helpful tricks to use with your new Volvo.

Turning off the Alarm

Modern key fobs are much more efficient than a traditional car key. They don't always work perfectly and the batteries may fail. If you're running out of time or do not want to visit a shop to have your key fob reprogrammed, you can attempt to make it work at home.

Find a smooth surface and lay out your key fob, battery, and any other keys. The cover should loosen and fall off leaving the key's mechanical blade beneath it.

If it doesn't, then the owner's manual should contain a procedure to reset the alarm.
